Salvaged Stories

Please visit www.simpleintrigue.com for my full portfolio

These books were all destined to become paper pulp but now they have another life.  These books are supposedly now rubbish with no value at all because no one wants them.  The elements used all represent a strong sense of movement and freedom.  These symbols of the natural world also act as a reminder that once these books were trees and forests home to entire ecosystems.

The books I see being pulped break my heart but I can’t rescue them all.  My personal collection is already overflowing so unfortunately I have to let the majority go.

About Keri Muller

Keri is a maker of stuff. She folds, glues and cuts paper and old books into artworks, traditional origami shapes and more abstract pieces. A passion for reading, collecting and hoarding old books, postcards, stamps and interesting prints has naturally led to focusing her art on working with these discarded items.  Giving these items another chance to tell a story forms the basis of much of her work. Most of these items are sourced from the recycling pile, the dump or from various charity shops in the Cape.

Keri has been working as an artist since early 2011.  Her passion for books started as soon as she could read and is what one would call a book worm.  Hours spent in second hand bookshops introduced her to the fact that a huge amount of books are simply being pulped.  Prior to this she worked in the travel industry and spent her days training staff, negotiating contracts and travelling to beautiful places all over Southern and East Africa.

Working as a full time artist with no formal training but a strong entrepreneurial spirit has given her the freedom to create and work on a range of different projects and installations for various private and corporate clients.

It is a constant dance to try to balance personal creative satisfaction and commercial viability to ensure a sustainable business model.
